About ART

Accelerated resolution therapy (ART) is an evidenced-based, rapid-eye-movement therapy that can be used to treat trauma, grief, anxiety, moral injury, OCD, toxic work environments, relationship discord, insomnia, self-esteem problems and many other issues. Research on ART for PTSD and Prolonged Grief has shown that most patients can achieve resolution in fewer than four sessions and that these effects can be sustained for months after treatment.1-3 There is no homework required for either the client or the therapist and appointments do not need to be scheduled at regular intervals; each ART session is a stand-alone intervention.
ART was derived from Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), but it has a tighter protocol, is more directive, more procedural, and easier to learn. The therapist walks the patient through a manualized sequence of mental tasks that the patient performs while doing sets of eye movements. Unlike traditional trauma-focused therapies, there is relatively little talking and verbal narration required, which affords clients a greater sense of safety and control. Practitioners get to apply their innate intuition and clinical skill set to guide the client toward achieving resolution in a creative and meaningful way.

ART often provides clients with significant psychological relief. Due to the protocol’s constant forward momentum, clients do not have to experience troubling memories for a protracted period of time. There is also a sense of closure with each session, so that they are not left feeling vulnerable, with unprocessed emotions and issues lingering between sessions. Words such as “calm,” “relieved,” and “hopeful” are commonly used by clients to describe how they feel after their ART sessions.

Wendi is truly passionate about training mental health providers in ART, not only because she has seen first-hand the rapid, life-changing impact it can have on clients, but because she has seen it transform the lives of therapists as well. Unlike most other trauma-focused therapies, ART spares the therapist many of the painful emotional details and graphic imagery that contribute to vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue. ART doesn’t require any preparation and allows therapists to use their innate clinical skills within the framework of an easy-to-learn treatment protocol.
Therapists using ART become more aware of their own body sensations, more adept at using relaxation techniques, and better able to manage their own stress. Furthermore, they get to experience true joy as they help clients rapidly resolve deep-seated issues on their own using imaginative and meaningful solutions. Training mental health providers in ART and watching them increase their confidence in treating trauma has been one of the biggest privileges of Wendi’s career.
